The word topophilia is defined as a bond or love with one’s environment, having a mental, emotional, and cognitive ties to a place. Deriving from the Greek topos “place” and -philia, “love of” it can encompass a wide range of emotions such as; nostalgia, attachment, fascination and satisfaction and it can be linked to cultural identity.

Inner Convergence (oil on 60” tondo panel ) is a self-portrait of me at 5yrs.
In meteorology, Convergence is when two air masses of the same temperature collide and struggle to dominate the atmosphere. Although this kind of convergence happens in the real world, this painting, as such with all of my work, is not meant to depict reality. As humans we experience both “the real” world and the psychological simultaneously. While we can all see, experience, and understand things together that exist in the physical/real world, for us to fully explain or comprehend another’s inner world is impossible. Perhaps art can attempt to come close.
Inner Convergence strives to communicate a manifestation of persistent, personal, long unspoken inner turmoil.

Emergence (oil on 20” tondo panel)
This painting is meant to connect the subject to the place culturally and suggests that physical distance does not change the connection. The subject, like the cherry blossoms, always returns.

Ingrained (oil on 20” tondo panel)
This painting is meant to depict a subject whose identity is bound to a specific place and time, an unsettling moment within a beautiful, golden, and bountiful landscape.
